An Open Letter to All Fandom
It has been brought to my attention that several articles as of late have been very, for lack of a better description, controversial. These articles are in reference to the rise in – for lack of any word that could possibly describe them better – “Fucking Weirdo Batshit crazy, reverse jacket wearing” fans.
I would first like to make it clear that we have absolutely no problem with fans, or even crazy fans, or just your plain weirdo fans, as a matter of fact the entire crew here falls proudly under those categories.
We see no problem dressing up to express your love of a comic, or movie or TV or all three. Point of interest, we all here also have fallen under that category once or twice. Wherein we find the problem is with the aforementioned minority the "Fucking Weirdo Bat Shit crazy, reverse jacket wearing” fans whom will now be known simply as FWBSCRJWF.
The FWBSCRJWF are the kind of people who will follow a celebrity from a panel at a con, and call up every room number trying to find out which room they are in. These people keep duck tape and razorblades in their Joanie Loves Chachi lunch box just in case their beloved should so happen about without their entourage. They are the people whom always ask the questions at the panel that obviously make the target of their misguided fantasies uncomfortable. You know them; they make you look down in shame when they ask for a kiss, or as my esteemed associate pointed out, an article of clothing.
These FWBSCRJWF are giving us a bad name. A really bad name and it won’t be long before they ruin it for all of us. I love seeing Nathan at a con, he is hilarious and a genuine fan of firefly, and a genuinely good person. He doesn’t mind taking pictures with people, he will sign and autograph with a smile and a joke, and even chat with you if you geek out and can’t help it, as we are all prone to do. But you can’t honestly expect him to continue as he does if we have these FWBSCRJWF’s all over him, they make me uncomfortable enough just to be around them, imagine how this guy feels.
I know that we here at HMC have taken a raw stance on the fandom, but despite what some people may have shouted in the comments at various sites, it was in good fun. All of us, Matt included, have pined over the pricey Browncoats in the many dealer booths. But some people really push things too far. Matt’s most recent article was posted on Whedonesque then pulled an hour later. We are left to only assume the reasons. It could have been much complaint by the FWBSCRJWF, most likely it was, but alas we can only speculate as to the reasons. If they were due to the FWBSCRJWF – know this – it is simply ridiculous to cater to the crazies.
The FWBSCRJWF and people like them are a cancer to fandom, honestly good honest fans have a hard enough time from people outside of fandom poking and laughing at us. We don’t need people like this to provoke them further and to alienate the actors themselves. This has to stop, and now while there is still time.
Now if you will please excuse me, my Ben Grimm costume isn’t going to make itself.
