Crapology

I sat down to read the latest headlines this morning and one was about SMG hitting gold with ‘The Grudge’. In the same article, it bashes Ben Affleck for doing a Christmas comedy, stating that audiences want to see him in action roles compared to comedies. The article, which I cannot find now, stated that SMG did a role in what audiences wanted to see her in, where as, Ben did not. I found myself wondering about the validity of that statement. The article made a couple of BTVS references from mentioning the show to slaying the box office. I like SMG in horror, but I also enjoy her in romantic comedies, dramas, and action, best of all, action. (Let’s just leave out that Harvard thing and the SD thing)  It credits her as one of the pieces that worked out making ‘The Grudge’ a success, not because of her acting, but because of her role as Buffy. Strange isn’t it? The simple way people phrase a sentence can allow people to interpret different meanings from it. I say this because the writer may not have meant what I got out of it, but it certainly was what I took from it.

Another good eyebrow raise was the article I just found while writing, ’The Mountain” has risen to become this season’s word- of-mouth hit’, then the first paragraph goes on to add this:  at least among the younger female set enamored with star Oliver Hudson. It states that the 2.8 million viewers have earned it 4 more episodes. What I find interesting is that James Marsters is going to be on this show as a possible recurring character, was the interest and word of mouth increase before or after the news of him signing on? Well, since this article was released today, I have to sit back and wonder if it was because of James fans. Don’t get me wrong, Oliver Hudson is a very handsome man, but he alone is not what would bring me to the tube. He and James? Quite possibly, but due to my WB boycott, I would have to say…. Throw in Alexis Denisof and you got yourself a deal. But it is on my ‘Aeryn may download’ list.

Nothing has grabbed my attention this season. I taped West Wing! That is how unexcited I am about this fall’s line-up. I am content with my TV DVD collections at the present. I think it is an illness. I am about to seek professional help for it. Why, oh why, can’t I get excited about a show anymore? Am I afraid of cancellation rejection? To become attached to a show only to have them pull it and replace it with some reality television piece of shit? Is there any hope for my television viewing habits or have I become one of those Americans who no longer watch television? God, I truly hope not.

With the ending of Mutant Enemy as a company, meaning he let everyone go but himself, I am faced with the era of no Joss on television once again. Before, I didn’t care who wrote what, all I knew that it was good or not. I didn’t care. I was too busy growing up, going to school and had a life. Now, it is this black void that mocks me from my blank television screen every time I come home. No more Whedon, no more Sorkin, where have all the cowboys gone?

**********West Wing Rant Here************

I am utterly displeased with West Wing. They are tearing my beloved cast apart. It is enough to make me sick. I have been displeased since they started showing President Bartlett as gun shy. Who is this man? If you go back and watch the first two seasons, there is no way in hell anyone can tell me that this is the same man. I don’t care if he has been shot and his daughter kidnapped, there is no logical reason for him to be a totally different person now. Oh and don’t get me started about how Leo is going to be sidelined and they move C.J. into Chief of Staff. I am all for women power and women rising to the top, but C.J. is a PR person! There is no way that she is qualified to be Chief of Staff, unless she gets a major overhaul of knowledge between now and then. Remember, this is the lady that had Sam to educate her on a majority of things, including the census. It isn’t that her knowledge is limited, she is very intelligent, but she has not shown that she knows what she would need to know to play such a role. I am a major C.J./Allison fan, so please don’t take this as bashing. I just don’t understand.

A few more things…. Toby resigns?!? What a loss… Josh goes to work on a Presidential campaign? Dear God, just rip my heart out John Wells! Will there be anyone left in the actual West Wing for me to give a crap about to tune into watch? I started watching because of the fast pace dialogues especially in the corridors of the West Wing, how will they do this now? Over the phone? Someone get me a painkiller for the major headache I have now. Sigh, I miss Rob Lowe.

********End of West Wing Rant***********

Damn, now I have that Paula Cole song, ‘Where have all the cowboys gone?’ song stuck in my friggin head. Bullocks.

Topic, topic, what was the topic? Yes, I remember now. Things I do not understand is the topic or so I loving call * crap *. New word for the day: Crapology is the study of those things that Aeryn does not understand because they are either pointless or just plain stupid. Bet you didn’t know that word now did you? Welcome to my world that is trapped in the land of my head.

There is salvation I have heard from the voices outside of my head. It comes in a show called ‘Lost’. I have downloaded one episode so far, but have yet to get the desire up to watch it. I am told that it is the shit and is so great. I think I said that right, but I am willing to give it a shot, I may start watching after episode 13 though. I’m getting cautious that way. Isn’t that depressing?

I should sue the networks for this, for years they have hooked me on a show only to pull the plug shortly in. I used to look forward to fall line ups, picking out what new show to see, now I look for reruns of the old favorites. I know I am not the only one that suffers from this disillusioned condition, but I think I am the only one that whines about it the loudest.

Speaking of which, can I get a ‘Hell yea’ for the Farscape mini? That is proof that when fans ban together, you can get what you want. I won’t discuss all of it, considering that I get interrupted every time I start to finish watching it. I only got to see the first hour, but it was an exciting first hour. Ben purrrrr…..  it made my heart smile to see you on the screen once again. Ever since I met Wayne Pilgrim at Dragon*Con, I can’t watch Scorpious the same way, because I hear Wayne’s Aussie accent and how friendly he was. It is funny how both, Farscape and Firefly, was cancelled and with the fan outrage and campaigns, they got either tele-movies or movies.

Oh speaking of things, I saw Spider-Man 2 finally. It was great. I have always hated Peter Parker for the way that he treated Mary-Jane though. At the end of the movie, it was better for me, but still I was annoyed with him. I can understand, but then again, I am more of a Mary-Jane mindset girl, so I can’t. Overall, it was really good.

I guess I should wrap this up, after Matt escaped, I have had to stay on the move. The police just keep showing up. I tried to tell them that it was all the El Prez’s idea, but after they busted into the White House and arrested The President, well…. Let’s just say my arrest warrant became a higher priority. Not my fault they misidentified El Prez. Who would be that stupid?

Reminder: Go vote if you can. In a week some of us will be allowed to vote, go vote. If you can’t decide, pick other and write in the person who should be the next President…. Silent Bob.

Aeryn: Sigh, you are right, but what will be the one thing that motivates me to cross into the next room and watch a show.. I do not know… Maybe I should ask the poobah.

Darkest Wicca: Amen Aeryn!!! Though I don’t buy the “bad TV flourishes when good viewers do nothing” argument. That assumes there _are_ good shows. Too many people settle for cheap-to-shoot, easy-to-write, empty-calorie manure that’s stinking up the airwaves and piling up like… :^D . Since I don’t want to step in it, I turn it off. If enough viewers did that, or protested, the networks might notice and then, maybe, we’ll get something decent. Like the Farscape mini… (Now where’s our Angel mini???)
(28.10.2004, 00:15)

Kirsten: Aeryn - Fogey has a point. Just remember, evil flourishes (or, in this case bad TV programming flourishes) when good people do nothing.
(27.10.2004, 22:14)

Voltage: Damn the man, save the Joss Empire!
(27.10.2004, 18:52)

Mr.TrickJr.: Well let me say this about that…Are they feeding us crap or are we asking for it. I’m deathly afraid that it’s “the man” giving us what we want. Buffy and Angel, I think, are anomalies. I don’t think we’re expected to watch a show from cradle to grave. Lost will be good for what, two seasons, three? Then it will turn to crap and we will turn elsewhere. Maybe they should shoot the show but only show the pilot and kick the season to DVD. Then cancellation fear would be a thing of the past.
(27.10.2004, 13:38)

Fogey: Mostly a good rant or article. But Fear of Cancellation? If we don’t watch/try out the few good shows that slip by the network programming jerks then we create a self-reinforcing fear. We contribute to a situation where the shows are cancelled due to lack of audience (us) because we are afraid to get hooked on the show since it might be cancelled. Getting dizzy trying to follow my own sentence here.
(27.10.2004, 10:22)

Voltage: I too share this cancellation fear. And poor, poor Joss. Y’know what? I wouldn’t be able to hold myself against the crap tv shows that are getting shuffled out like at a factory somewhere. Reality after reality after reality. My big fat obnoxious TV shows.

  • Oh, and I loved the musing. Totally true, and I give my vote for Silent Bob as president. :D Now I just have to go actually vote for pres. Meh, screw early voting, I’m lazy. I’ll vote on tues. LOL

DaddyCatALSO: Aeryn; I frist developed “cancellation fear” over ten years ago so you aren’t alone, never worry about a lack of people to mourn with!. d’kat
