Sean Maher

Best known since Firefly for voicing Nightwing in DC's animated films and playing Don John in Much Ado About Nothing.

After the show

Sean Maher reprised Simon Tam in the 2005 film Serenity. That year he also appeared in the Lifetime film The Dive from Clausen’s Pier, followed by the TV movie Wedding Wars (2006).

After becoming a parent in 2007, Maher stepped back from acting for about two years to be a stay-at-home dad. He returned in 2009 with a guest role in the pilot of Drop Dead Diva, then guest starred on The Mentalist, Human Target and Warehouse 13 in 2010.

In 2011 he played a closeted gay man in a sham marriage on NBC’s The Playboy Club. That year he publicly came out as gay, using the role as a platform to do so. He also played Marcus on Make It or Break It (2011 to 2012).

In 2012 he played the villain Don John in Joss Whedon’s black-and-white adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing, alongside Nathan Fillion. He played Mark Scheffer, the bomber known as Shrapnel, in two episodes of Arrow (2013 to 2014), and appeared as Jake on HBO’s Looking and as himself in Alan Tudyk’s web series Con Man (2015).

Starting with Son of Batman (2014), Maher became the regular voice of Dick Grayson, also known as Nightwing, in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies. He returned to the role in Batman vs. Robin (2015), Batman: Bad Blood and Justice League vs. Teen Titans (2016), Teen Titans: The Judas Contract (2017), Batman: Hush (2019) and Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans (2019).

On live-action TV he guest starred on 9-1-1 (2018) and on The Rookie (2019) as Caleb Jost, in an episode opposite Fillion.

Lately

Maher has kept a low screen profile in recent years, with no new screen roles announced since 2019 that we could confirm.

In March 2026, at a live taping of Fillion and Tudyk’s podcast Once We Were Spacemen at Awesome Con in Washington, D.C., Fillion announced that an animated Firefly series is in development with 20th Television Animation. Maher was among the original cast at the announcement and is expected to voice Simon again. Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are attached as showrunners, and the series would be set between the original show and Serenity. As of October 2026 no network or platform has been announced.
