What You Missed: The Buffy Reboot, an Emmys Reunion and New Comics
The site was dark for a long time, and the Buffyverse kept moving without us. Here’s the catch-up, as of the end of October 2026.
The Hulu revival is dead
The sequel series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, got as far as a finished pilot. Chloé Zhao directed it, Ryan Kiera Armstrong played a new Slayer named Nova, and Sarah Michelle Gellar was back as Buffy and as an executive producer.
In March 2026, Gellar announced on Instagram that “Hulu has decided not to move forward.” Zhao told Variety she was “not surprised.” Variety’s sources said Zhao’s take may not have been mainstream enough for Hulu, and that the pilot centered on Nova, with Gellar on screen far less than fans might have expected. Gellar pushed back on that, and put the blame on an executive she said didn’t know the original show. Variety also reported that Hulu would still consider other takes on Buffy down the road. No other network or streamer has picked it up.
Charisma Carpenter, for the record, had already said in August 2025 that she wasn’t in it.
Buffy and Angel at the Emmys
On September 14, Gellar and David Boreanaz presented together at the Emmys, their first reunion in nine years. Boreanaz said he’d always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together. Gellar, with a nod to the cancelled revival: “Well, I guess we won’t find out!”
They also paused to remember the cast members we lost: Michelle Trachtenberg, Nicholas Brendon and Anthony Stewart Head. Eric wrote about all three earlier this month.
New comics, now in 2027
Dynamite Entertainment has the comics license now, with new Buffy, Angel and Firefly series. They were due this summer, then pushed back. The current plan:
- Buffy #1 on March 10, 2027, written by Kelly Thompson. The issue grew from 32 to 48 pages.
- Angel #1 later in March 2027, also by Thompson, picking up right where Buffy #1 leaves off. Read them together.
- Firefly #1 in early 2027, by Mark Russell and Lorenzo Re. Reports disagree on the month.
March 10, 2027 is also the 30th anniversary of the night Buffy premiered. Fitting.
Still no home for animated Firefly
Nothing new since August, when Nathan Fillion said the animated series was still looking for a network or streamer. We wrote up everything we know.
If you’re in Los Angeles this weekend
Art of the Hellmouth, a fan art show celebrating Buffy and Angel, is open through November 1 at Mobyu’s Coffee & Tea in North Hollywood. Admission is free.
Where’s everybody now?
