Root on Person of Interest, Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, and leads on The Gifted and The Watchful Eye.

After the show

When Angel ended in 2004, Acker joined the fifth and final season of ABC’s Alias as the operative Kelly Peyton, becoming a series regular in 2006. She reunited with Joss Whedon on Dollhouse (2009 to 2010) as Dr. Claire Saunders, also known as Whiskey, and appeared in the horror film The Cabin in the Woods (2012), which Whedon co-wrote. In Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing (2012) she played Beatrice opposite her Angel castmate Alexis Denisof.

Her longest-running role came on CBS’s Person of Interest, where she played the hacker Samantha “Root” Groves. She began as a recurring guest in 2012, became a series regular in season three, and from the 100th episode also voiced the Machine. The show ended in 2016.

In 2017 she was cast as Caitlin Strucker, the mother of two mutant children, in Fox’s Marvel series The Gifted, which ran for two seasons through 2019. She then recurred as Catherine in season three of 9-1-1: Lone Star (2022).

On February 15, 2021, after Charisma Carpenter’s statement about Joss Whedon’s conduct on Buffy and Angel, Acker posted on Twitter: “I will always be proud of the work we all did on Angel. While I personally had a good and professional experience, it is heartbreaking to hear not everyone did.” She continued: “I do not condone any actions that made anyone feel hurt or uncomfortable,” and “I offer love and support to everyone who is speaking out to tell their truths.”

In 2023 Acker starred as Tory in Freeform’s thriller series The Watchful Eye. On film she played Theresa in Ordinary Angels (February 2024), opposite Hilary Swank, and Lori in The Unbreakable Boy (February 2025), with Zachary Levi. She guest-starred on Chicago Med in 2025. In October 2025 she was announced as Diane in Invader, a holiday-set home-invasion thriller, which Deadline reported was being introduced to buyers at the American Film Market.
